Cinegear 2024: Panos Golfis and Cinematically, participate at Hollywood’s Premier Film Expo at Warner Bros Studios

Once again, in early June 2024, Panos Golfis participated in Hollywood’s largest film festival/conference/exhibition/seminar, the Cine Gear Expo, which took place on the grounds of the historic Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California. As always, Golfis was the only Greek cinematographer and technical press journalist to attend this prestigious event.

After visiting the Paramount Studios, Panos Golfis, the only Greek cinematographer, explored the vast facilities of the Warner Bros Studios in Burbank.

The Largest Cine Gear Expo of All Time

For 28 years, the Cine Gear Expo LA, the oldest and largest of the Cine Gear Expo family, has been the annual gathering of all film professionals on the West Coast of America. In the last 7-8 years, Cine Gear Expo has also been held in two other American cities on different dates: in Atlanta in early October and in New York in mid-March. However, the largest and oldest of the three different Cine Gear Expos is the one in Los Angeles, which attracts thousands of American professionals from the film, television, and advertising industries.

This year, after 27 years at the backlots of Paramount Studios, the event moved from old Hollywood to Burbank, on the other side of Mount Lee, the small Hollywood mountain, to the historic backlots of Warner Bros Studios. You see, in the last 4-5 years, Cine Gear Expo LA had grown so much that it could no longer fit in the Paramount Studios backlot, which is why it moved to the much larger backlots of Warner Bros Studios.

Additionally, this year, Cine Gear Expo LA recorded the highest number of visitors in its history, something that was immediately apparent from the large crowds and the difficulty in moving around the New York neighborhood of the Warner Bros Studios backlot! The crowd was so large that it was difficult to walk between the booths under the scorching Californian sun.

This is the Steven J. Ross Theater, the beautiful high-tech cinema hall that dominates the New York neighborhood of the Warner Bros Studios backlot. This venue hosted the best and biggest masterclasses, seminars, discussions, and the Cine Gear Expo LA 2024 festival competitions.

The historic Stage 24, built in 1935, has been the setting for scenes from films such as Blade Runner and A Star is Born and television series like Friends.

For the first time in its 28-year history, Cine Gear Expo LA was hosted in the vast backlots of Warner Bros Studios in Burbank, California, at the historic Warner Bros Studios, which are over 100 years old and where classic cinematic masterpieces like Casablanca, My Fair Lady, The Jazz Singer, Rebel Without a Cause, and the recent award-winning Barbie were filmed, as well as popular TV series like Friends and The Big Bang Theory.

Cine Gear Expo LA 2024 was hosted on the streets of New York and French exterior sets of Warner’s main lot, where Bonnie and Clyde were filmed. This area spans 110 hectares, equivalent to half a square kilometer, and includes 29 large sound stages and 11 exterior sets.

With IBC 2024 Just Around the Corner, Blackmagic Design Shines as the Highlight and Game Changer at NAB 2024

As the IBC 2024 conference draws near, the echoes of NAB 2024 still resonate in the industry. This April in Las Vegas was a landmark event, and Blackmagic Design once again proved to be the standout force.

Under the visionary leadership of Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design has consistently set the stage on fire at major industry events. This year, the company not only maintained its tradition but elevated it to new heights, leaving a lasting impression on attendees.

Blackmagic Design Steals the Show

Many industry professionals and NAB visitors agreed that Blackmagic Design stole the show. Their impressive display of innovation was highlighted by the unveiling of several groundbreaking products, including the much-anticipated Ursa Cine 12K and its larger IMAX counterpart.

In just 15 years, Blackmagic Design has evolved from a startup into a powerhouse, challenging industry giants like ARRI, which has been a major player for over a century. The ARRI Alexa 65, the only other digital IMAX camera, is notoriously expensive, underscoring the significance of Blackmagic’s new offerings.

A Bold Marketing Strategy

Blackmagic Design’s marketing was equally noteworthy. The company transformed the Las Vegas Convention Center into a canvas of Blackmagic’s latest innovations, with its branding saturating the venue. From massive banners to a hotel takeover, their presence was inescapable, underscoring their commitment to making a statement.

New Products Unveiled at NAB 2024

Among the highlights of Blackmagic Design’s NAB presentation were:

  • DaVinci Resolve 19
  • DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel
  • Pyxis 6K, PL, EF, L mount, full-frame camera
  • Ursa Cine 12K full-frame camera
  • Ursa Cine 17K, 65mm camera
  • Ursa Cine EVF
  • ATEM 1 M/E Constellation 4K
  • Cloud Store Max 48TB
  • … and more.

A particularly exciting moment was the introduction of the Pyxis 6K camera, a modular model that many had been eagerly awaiting. While opinions on the Pyxis 6K were mixed, with some praising its potential and others critiquing its design and features, it’s clear that Blackmagic is pushing boundaries with its innovations.

The Ursa Cine 12K: A True Game Changer

For Panos Golfis, the crowning achievement of Blackmagic’s NAB 2024 presentation was the Ursa Cine 12K full-frame camera. This model represents a significant leap forward from its predecessors, offering high-end performance at a fraction of the cost of similar cameras from competitors. Dubbed the “poor man’s Venice,” the Ursa Cine 12K is set to rival top-tier cameras like Sony’s Venice series and ARRI’s Alexa LF.

In Panos Golfis’s 30 years of experience, he has rarely seen such a remarkable piece of equipment. The Ursa Cine 12K delivers extraordinary quality that challenges even the most expensive cameras on the market, making it a must-have for both seasoned professionals and aspiring filmmakers.

DZO Paves the Way for Anamorphic Filmmaking at IBC2023

At this year’s IBC2023, we had the exciting opportunity to visit DZO’s stand and witness firsthand their latest innovation in cinema lenses. DZO demonstrates its commitment to pushing the boundaries of anamorphic filmmaking by showcasing their brand-new Pavo Primes. Here’s a comprehensive dive into what we saw and why it matters for filmmakers.

DZO’s Pavo Primes – A Deeper Look

At first glance, what catches the eye is the robust design and clear intention behind the Pavo Primes. These 2x anamorphic cinema lenses, while not breaking new ground in terms of features, promise reliability – an invaluable trait in professional film production.

The set is comprehensive: 28mm, 32mm, 40mm, 55mm, and 75mm available immediately, with a 100mm launching later in the year. The consistency in the build and design across these lenses is evident, emphasizing ease of use on set and consistent results.

Striking the Balance: Accessibility and Reliability

DZO’s intention with the Pavo Primes is to democratize anamorphic filmmaking. By sidestepping the race for groundbreaking features, DZO has produced lenses that filmmakers can rely on, ensuring no time is wasted on set due to technical glitches. The integrated back-focus adjustment is a practical feature, simplifying the often tedious process of achieving perfect infinity focus. However, this feature must be utilized by those with experience, ensuring optimal results.

Build & Durability

Given the skepticism that occasionally surrounds newer entrants in the lens market, especially from Southeast Asia, DZO’s track record stands them in good stead. Their previous products have proven robust and reliable, and there’s no reason to believe the Pavo Primes will be any different. In contrast to DIY anamorphic setups, which might offer creativity but risk fragility, the Pavo Primes promises to withstand the high-paced, demanding environment of professional film sets.

A Nod to Aesthetics and Character

In today’s filmmaking landscape, it’s not enough for lenses to be technically proficient; they must also deliver on aesthetics. Here, the Pavo Primes shine. They offer that characteristic 2x anamorphic squeeze, producing images that resonate with depth and cinematic charm. The choice of neutral or blue coatings means cinematographers can dictate the flare’s hue, adding another layer of creative control.

Looking Forward

The pricing strategy, with individual lenses priced at $5,499 and bundled options available, reinforces DZO’s commitment to accessibility. This approach ensures that more filmmakers get quality anamorphic lenses without breaking the bank. With shipments starting in October, the film community is abuzz with anticipation.

Conclusion

IBC2023 was a testament to DZO’s commitment to innovation and quality. The Pavo Primes are a testament to this commitment, and their introduction to the market is poised to shift the dynamics of anamorphic filmmaking. As the industry waits with bated breath for the first batch of shipments, early indications suggest that DZO’s latest offering is not just a lens but a tool that can shape the future of cinema.

Rising Stars in Filmmaking: Zolar Vega 60C and 80C Lights vs. Arri

The world of filmmaking is always on the lookout for cutting-edge equipment that can enhance the production value of projects, and lighting equipment plays an indispensable role in this domain. As the industry evolves, new players and products emerge, sometimes challenging the dominance of well-established brands. The Zolar Vega 60C and 80C lights are perfect examples of this phenomenon, often called part of the “Arri Killer Lineup.” Let’s delve deeper into the features and specifications of these lights and discover what makes them so sought-after in the filmmaking world.

Zolar Vega 60C and 80C: A Brief Overview

The Zolar Vega 60C and 80C are celebrated for their remarkable light quality, versatility, and design features tailored to modern filmmakers’ dynamic needs. Their growing popularity in the industry has earned them the reputation of being strong contenders against industry giants like Arri.

Key Features:

Adjustable Color Temperature: One of the most commendable features of the Zolar Vega lineup is its adjustable color temperature. This allows filmmakers to tweak the ambiance according to the mood and theme of the scene without the need for additional equipment or filters.

High CRI (Color Rendering Index): A high CRI ensures that the light source accurately reproduces the colors of various objects. The 60C and 80C models boast a high CRI, ensuring that the colors captured on camera are true to their real-life appearance. This is especially crucial for filmmakers who prioritize color accuracy and fidelity.

Durable Design: In the fast-paced environment of film sets, equipment’s durability is paramount. The Zolar Vega lights are constructed with high-quality materials, making them robust and long-lasting. Their design ensures they can withstand the inevitable bumps and knocks on set.

Why the ‘Arri Killer’ Label?

“Arri Killer” does not merely represent competition against the brand Arri. It symbolizes a changing trend in the filmmaking industry, where newer brands and models are challenging the status quo, offering similar or even better features at competitive prices.

Zolar Vega’s 60C and 80C have carved out a niche by providing high-quality output comparable to Arri’s offerings. Moreover, the flexibility and versatility they bring to the table and their affordability make them an attractive option for filmmakers across the spectrum, from indie producers to big studio productions.

Conclusion

While it’s essential to acknowledge the monumental legacy and quality that Arri has provided to the filmmaking world, it’s equally important to recognize the rising stars. The Zolar Vega 60C and 80C lights have undoubtedly made their mark and are setting new standards in lighting technology. Whether they are genuinely ‘Arri Killers’ or not is subjective, but there’s no denying their remarkable prowess and the value they add to any production.

“Blackmagic Design’s Role in the Creation of the Documentary ‘Common Ground'”

The Revolution in Digital Filmmaking

In a significant technological leap for the film industry, Blackmagic Design recently announced its pivotal role in producing the full-length documentary “Common Ground.” The documentary was exclusively shot using Blackmagic Design digital film cameras and was further refined using DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing, grading, visual effects (VFX), and audio post-production. The entire process was hosted on Blackmagic Cloud, marking a new chapter in film post-production.

The Legacy of “Kiss the Ground” Continues

“Common Ground” is a sequel to the acclaimed “Kiss the Ground.” Continuing the narrative, it highlights the ancient yet innovative approach of “regenerative agriculture.” This method has demonstrated potential in sustainable farming and climate change mitigation, water conservation, and global food supply stabilization. With filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell at the helm, the documentary was recognized and celebrated at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, clinching the Human Nature Award. The film’s voice is strengthened by the narration provided by notable figures like Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, Ian Somerhalder, and Donald Glover.

Choosing Blackmagic Design

During “Kiss the Ground’s” production, the Tickells were introduced to Blackmagic Design cameras. Impressed by its adaptability and resilience, Josh Tickell stated, “We felt like the Blackmagic Design workflow was the answer.” Their toolkit for “Common Ground” incorporated two Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K digital film cameras and two Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6Ks. These instruments ensured high-quality interviews, effective fieldwork coverage, and even high-speed shots.

Hoping to give the documentary a cinematic touch, Josh emphasized their intent: “We wanted a bright sunny look, big, bold blues, greens, and nice skin tones.” The combination of Pictor zoom and prime lenses with Blackmagic cameras achieved this vision. Moreover, the decision to shoot in Blackmagic RAW with a constant bitrate of 12:1 ensured adaptability in post-production.

Seamless Post-Production Experience

Transitioning to DaVinci Resolve Studio, the Tickells found the process surprisingly smooth. “We pumped more than 300 hours of footage through Resolve using a 10 GB ecosystem, and we found that it was stronger in many ways than our previous NLE,” Josh revealed. Blackmagic Cloud played an instrumental role in streamlining post-production, offering an accessible platform for collaboration among artists.

One of the significant advantages of this system was its flexibility. FM Radio modulation analyzer DB4005

DB4005 is DEVA Broadcast’s third-generation digital FM Radio modulation analyzer and receiver, the result of long years of experience and a desire to always provide intelligent near-perfect solutions while keeping pace with the very latest technological developments and trends.

With this product, upon demodulation of the FM signal, the RF signal is digitalized by the SDR FM tuner and all signal processing is achieved through sophisticated DSP algorithms. The high precision of the powerful digital filters used in this equipment enables the FM signal to be accurately and repeatedly analyzed with each device. An important asset to the DB4005 is the MPX input, which allows you to monitor external composite signals, regardless of whether they are from a composite STL receiver/stereo FM encoder, or from an off-air source. As this is a tool of great processing power, it provides detailed readings of all the Multiplex FM signal components, while all measurements are refreshed simultaneously and synchronously.

Another useful feature of the DB4005 is the Loudness Meter, which allows for measurements to be shown as defined by ITU BS.1770-4 and EBU R128 recommendations, as the product supports both standards.
